Kevin nailed a heavyweight Chinaman fish Symphorus nematophorus — a wonderful kicking, bucking, head shaking bronco of a beast which is on Queensland’s ‘no take’ list due to some of them being known to cause ciguatera — a most unwelcome form of fish poisoning. Pete’s brace of coral trout were at the other extreme, being among the state’s finest table fare. Steve’s quality red throat sweetlip also was welcomed on to the dinner plates. Once again, many thanks to the folks in pink shirts who put on such a great event and who make Team CruiseCraft participants so welcome every year. Also, a very special thanks to one of the event’s key organisers, Jeff Amos, who is retiring to take a well-deserved break from the pressures of staging such an amazing event. As we always say, the Boyne-Tannum Hook-Up is one of the best, if not the best, family fishing tournament in Australia. Over the June long weekend, more than 30 thousand visitors went through the gates to enjoy the displays and activities throughout Bray Park where the tournament’s headquarters are based. This year, more than estuarine fish were tagged and released back into the Boyne River making a valuable contribution to the local piscatorial database. The information is regularly used by the Department of Primary Industries and Queensland Fisheries as well as various universities and students studying marine sciences.

PDF What a great seasonal change the last week of autumn and first week of winter was, with just stunning with still conditions, flat seas and cloud-free skies. This gave a lot of anglers the opportunity to shoot out to the reefs and get a bit of a pre fish in before the Boyne Tannum Hook up. In the live category saw just under fish consisting of bream, whiting flathead, grunter and mangrove jack. My hook-up session was spent on the Calliope fishing out of the kayak all day with a mate, it was slow fishing with a combined total of 5 bream up to 37cm, one barra at 68cm and one mangrove jack at 42cm, all on lures.

It is sad that this will be our last public holiday long weekend for the year. None the less, winter in Gladstone is glorious. On the Reef What winter reef trips lack in quantity this month they make up in quality. The deeper holes of the reef areas prove to be the better option in Gladstone during winter. I expect that to continue during June. My records indicate that the southern sections of Rock Cod shoals will be where the bigger fish are found during June.

This is a relevant issue for property investors because of the link between resources activity, jobs creation and consequent demand for real estate in mining towns, regional centres and capital cities. There is a fundamental mis-reading of the signals coming out of the resources sector, by so-called analysts and by media. Cost-cutting is seen as evidence that the sector is dying.
A decline in prices for some commodities, such as coal, is interpreted as death of the industry rather than simply another stage in the volatile resources cycle. We have been in the business for a long time and we have withstood many of these cycles and I would expect to continue to do so. Most of the capital still has to be spent in order to deliver these big projects.
Dredging is scheduled to be finished by May, in time for thousands of boaties due to arrive for the annual Boyne Tannum HookUp. Member for Gladstone, Glenn Butcher said the long-awaited $1 million project would make the river mouth a safer place for recreational and commercial fishermen.
Mud crabs are taking the bait in CQ waters 12th Jun 9: Twenty knots plus on Saturday, easing to 15 knots during Sunday with a chance of a shower or two. It might be the time to earn brownie points for better days. There have been lots of flathead, bream and whiting around the place in most of the local estuaries. Rosslyn Bay Harbour and Causeway Lake are two top options for those wanting to get out there and brave the conditions. Mud crabs are still on the chew and don’t look like stopping much in the near future.
One or two of the crabs I saw this week are as good as you get. Big chocolate bucks taken from Port Alma and Coorooman Creek; it makes my mouth water just thinking about them. The conditions should improve over the week and could be okay for the following weekend. Last weekend was the Boyne Tannum HookUp and once again the event was outstanding from several perspectives, including the money raised for charity, the coming together of the fishing community and the positive effect on the local economy.
Well done to the organisers of this top event that has now been going for 20 years.

Estuaries a good wind break 19th Jun This is the place! Bream, flathead and whiting are the main target species in the winter months with places like Coorooman Creek and Corio Bay starting to produce the larger fish. Targeting species is a great way to fine tune the tackle you use. Once you have found a technique that works, fishing becomes much more productive.
For flathead fishing, I prefer using various types of lures or plastics anything that will drag along the bottom. You may get the chance to head offshore over the next few days but it looks like the wind will get up for the weekend. Edan Hemming with his The water has been stirred up in the bay, so if you get out you will probably have to head out to the islands to find some clearer water.
